What is São João celebration in Porto?

São João is one of the biggest and most vibrant festivals in Europe. Every June 23rd, the city of Porto transforms into a giant party filled with fireworks, music, food, and dancing in the streets. Locals and tourists alike swing plastic hammers, release glowing lanterns into the night sky, and grill sardines until dawn.

With roots stretching back over 600 years, the festival began as a midsummer celebration before becoming linked to Saint John the Baptist. The atmosphere is special: bonfires, music, and the scent of grilled sardines drifts through the city. As night falls, lanterns are released into the sky. Then, at midnight, a big fireworks display lights up the Douro River, drawing huge crowds to the waterfront for a spectacular finale. During the whole celebration participants give each other friendly head taps with plastic hammers, a symbol of luck and affection. This is one of the most known traditions.

Whether you’re dancing through Porto’s narrow streets, sharing a sardine sandwich with friends, or simply watching the lanterns overhead, São João is a celebration you’ll never forget.
